the art of touch : Grief and Joy
I have an interest in grief. Or more specifically, an interest in the ways that sorrow permeates and impacts our being. Everyone of us recognise the myriad ways it shows up; feeling low or anxious, depressed or feeling ’empty’, the weight of ennui. And we surely all know – or will one day – the airless shock of overpowering profound loss.
No-one is immune even if we narrow our world and try to feel nothing.
Over the years I have learned that by allowing my various sorrows to be felt, as deeply as I am able, touching the hurt and then leaving again, has brought me more joy, more freedom, more aliveness. These days, I feel both joy and sorrow in equal measure. The more I feel my sadness, the more delight and joy I feel.
And that is the reason for my deep interest.

It isn’t only the death of those we love, although that can give rise to the strongest waves. Sadness sits on our skin and in our cells; the end of a relationship, redundancy, illness, the loss of a creative dream, children leaving home, miscarriage and the ache for pregnancy that doesn’t come. The destruction of our precious natural world or the effects of ageing… all of these and more.
And it is all held in the body.
So, whatever you are experiencing, or not, know that I, too, know how our bodies hold grief. And that we also have the capacity for immeasurable joy.
Massage, body work and facial care can reach beyond skin deep. It can touch our tender places and open us to more…
You are welcome to bring it all.
With or without words; there is no expectation of you sharing your feelings with me. You body will know what feels right.
